Rocks of Ages ... or "Them are some OLD rocks"!!!!

Today we drove about 85 miles South to Stonehenge and Salisbury.

Stonehenge is pretty much exactly as advertised ... a big pile of rocks out in the middle of nowhere! While the sight itself is less than exciting ... when one considers the massive human effort it took to actually construct this whatever it is and the fact that it is aligned the summer and winter solstices and that it was done over 5000 years ago it's fairly awe inspiring!

There are a couple of photo's embedded here there are many more if you click on the web album link over on the left of the web log.

After Stonehenge we motored to the city of Salisbury to tour the Cathedral there.  Parking was an adventure and we wound up parking on a side street at a 1 hour meter ... this required a trip back from the tour to re-feed the meter .... but as the pictures show the Cathedral was impressive.  It was built in 1220 mostly finished in 1258 ... this is a OLD OLD church and incredibly ornate inside and out ... again a few pictures here and more in the gallery.

After Salisbury we made a brief stop at SARUM ... that is the oldest recorded place of human habitation dating back 5000 years shortly after the Ice Age.

The ruins we saw were of a Castle by William The Conqueror around 1066 ... the cathedral was moved from that point to Salisbury in the 1200's.
