A post to "catch up" ... No Wifi No Bueno!!!!

OK ... it is Thursday night 9/30/2010 and we are in York, England at a B&B that does in fact have WiFi access which we have determined is as important as running water and in door toilets!!!  I made the B&B reservation in Edinburgh and failed to confirm that WiFi was available ... it wasn't and I have thus fallen horribly behind on web log posting and photo uploading.  and it looks very much like the B&B I have booked for tomorrow night near Cambridge does not have WiFi either ... I really messed up on these two choices.

So ... this post is intended to be a very compacted "catch up" of what we have done after the feast in Bunratty Castle and now ... and it is quite a lot of ground to cover.

We left Bunratty and drove for several hours into Northern Ireland and the city of Belfast ... Belfast, and I suppose Northern Ireland as a whole is a little less "cheery" than some of our previous stops ... the unemployment rate is apparently extremely high and we observed MANY blocks of huge office building completely vacant with "To Let" signs everywhere..  We stayed in a Holiday Inn express as close to the ferry dock as we could get .. parked in the lot that was secured with razor wire .... hmmm ... and did not venture out of the hotel until the next morning when we left for the ferry.  We simply didn't feel exactly "safe" in Belfast.  Could have been completely incorrect about that but none of us wanted to take a chance.

This building was a part of a large number across from our hotel ... empty ...

So we boarded the ferry and had a very smooth crossing to Stranraer, Scotland.

We drove over for the most part very good roads towards Edinburgh ... we stopped at a "truck stop" for dinner before entering the city ...

Not our best meal ...

We managed to find our B&B with only one wrong doorbell ... and were in for the night.  The folks running the accomodation were very nice and the next morning the owner drove Woodie and I down to a laundry, we left our clothes and he picked them up for us before we returned from the day's touring.  The rooms were "tiny" but the hosts were nice, the food was good and we had easy access to public transportation ... no wifi was the only real rough spot.

For the sake of brevity I'm just going to ,mention several of the things we saw and did in Edinburgh and then post some pictures ..

Our first tour was of Edinburgh Castle ... while there we saw some portraits of long lost relatives and I believe Woodie and Linda did the same ....

Besides the castle we did some serious shopping and took a ride out to Rosslyn Chapel.  This chapel is of course a significant player un Dan Brown's book The Di Vinci Code and is surrounded with several legends relating to the Templar Knights and even a possible burial place of Mary Magdalene.  It was an interesting tour.

We booked a tour of the Scottish Highlands that would take us all the way up to Loch Ness ... this was basically a 5 hour bus ride up, a couple of hours around the Loch and 5 hours back ... it made for a very long day, the weather was mostly rainy but we were all glad to have had the chance to stand on the banks of the famous Loch Ness ... even if we didn't catch sight of Nessie.

Today we drove from Edinburgh to York with a side trip to see Hadrian's Wall ...   along the way we saw lots of scenery as the day was very clear for the most part.

Ok now I'm going to dump several pictures into the web log with many many more in the gallery ... I'll only note a few captions ... I'll clean that up when I'm home with more time and better network access.

Well the Wifi here apparently can't handle the bandwidth necessary to process all the photos so I'm going to terminate this post with the promise to include more photos as I can ... the gallery has a full complement of pics now but not a lot of commentary ...

Tomorrow Cambridge and the next day into London for the duration.

The Ring and The Feast .... driving in a circle and dining with the Earl

I'm writing this from the Holiday Inn lobby in Belfast, Northern Ireland.  It's about 9PM Sunday September 26.  We left Bunratty, Ireland about 9:30AM and had a relatively uneventful and pleasant drive over mostly modern highway ... a welcome change from some of the roads we have motored down lately!

I want to take a moment and pay homage to one of our troop that gets little pictorial press in the gallery but is a valued and critical member of our little "road family" ... "Wicked Wanda"!!

From Great Britain Odyssey 2010
We occasionally single her out for well deserved cursing ... but for the most part she has guided us down roads and through cities that would have been much more difficult had she not been along ... here's to you Wicked Wanda!!   Thanks for the ride so far!

Ok yesterday was a fairly long day ... we left Killarney, Ireland about 7:30AM and headed out the Ring of Kerry .... arriving back in Killarney about five and one half hours later ... well ... they did say it was a "ring"!  We left so early in order to get ahead of the parade of tour buses that would be on the same narrow windy road about 8:30AM ... we did not want to be behind them!!

Clearly the point of that jaunt was to see the amazing scenery through County Kerry ... and as the pictures show it is truely spectacular! (as always ... a few pics here and many more in the gallery)

At 8:45PM we went over to Bunratty Castle for the Medieval Banquet ...

From Great Britain Odyssey 2010

For me at least the "feast" far exceed my expectations ... we were greeted at the castle by folks in period garb and served a cup of mead ... which is pretty potent stuff!! Then we were treated to some really fine Irish "chamber music" in the hall played by a young man on the fiddle and a young lady on the cello ... both of these folks were accomplished musicians and I really enjoyed their playing having no clue what further treats we had in store ...

From Great Britain Odyssey 2010

We were then seated in the grand hall ... all 120+ of us and served a really good meal of 'soup', pork ribs, baked chicken, vegetables and a custard like dessert. These were referred to as "removes" and in this was a "4 remove meal" ... never heard it called that before but it makes sense ... we also had red and white wine with the meal.  We ate with our fingers and a knife ... it made for a really fun experience!  All during dinner we were entertained by singers and musicians ... and "tom" our master of ceremonies kept up an entertaining and often comical spiel.   Some pictures here others in the gallery ...

I have several pics of this fiddle player because he was sooo damn good!!! And he was incredibly shy ... he was always looking at the floor even when he got huge rounds of applause ... I stopped him outside after the show and told him what an outstanding job I thought he had done ... he shyly looked at the ground and said "yeah it was OK" and hurried off ... one very talented young man in my opinion.

So ...we made it back to the B&B after a short walk in the dark around 11:30 PM and quickly went to bed ... got up this morning had a nice Irish breakfast and drove to Belfast where this posting began ... tomorrow we ferry to Scotland and drive to Edinburgh where we will stay a few days ...

Kissing the Blarney Stone and Shopping in Killarney ... Could we get more Irish??

Well we are 10 days into the odyssey, we have logged over 1000 miles in the car and we are all still on good speaking terms!   Hazzah!!

Today we logged about 160 km ... our first stop was at the Blarney Castle .  Now essentially there is only one reason to go to the Blarney Castle and that is of course to kiss the Blarney Stone! ... and being proper tourists ... we made the climb to the top of the castle and kissed the stone ... here are a few pics of our trek and our kisses ...

The castle actually is pretty cool ...

So we are in for the night and intend to get a VERY early start tomorrow morning as we will be doing the Ring of Kerry  drive tomorrow and then up to Bunratty to attend a Medieval Feast in the evening.  Since we will be late tomorrow night I don't expect to post again until we are in Belfast on Sunday night.
